At the end of a long season, all of the sailing yachts are hauled ashore for their winter refit programme.  It is absolutely vital that each yacht is given a proper full going over and service in the winter so as to ensure that they perform properly and reliably during the next season.  The Nisos engineering team works full time all winter on the refit. A rough programme of what happens is:

 - engines/saildrives serviced

 - all sails, biminis, sprayhood, sail bags, cockpit cushions stripped and sent away for washing and servicing/replacement where required

 - all interior furnishings stripped and sent away for washing and servicing/replacement where required

 - water tanks flushed

 - diesel tanks brimmed for the winter (so as to stop any diesel bug forming)

 - windlass motors serviced

 - winches serviced

 - steering mechanisms checked and serviced

 - GRP dings repaired

 - internal hard wearing areas re-varnished (namely chart tables, companionways and anywhere else that needs it)

 - floors lifted and bilges deep cleaned

 - sea cocks checked and replaced where required (due to the poor quality of metal sea cocks available these days we are now trialling plastic sea cocks)

 - toilet pumps replaced, holding tank waste pipes inspected and replaced where required, holding tanks flushed out

 - all electronics checked

 - any bent stantions/damaged guard wires replaced

 - life rafts and life jackets serviced

 - hulls polished and new antifoul applied

 - damaged stern fender/bumpers replaced

 - keels/keel bolts inspected

 - all rigging carefully inspected and standing rigging replaced as required.

 - running rigging replaced as required

 - new mooring warps, fender lines

 - inventory checks and replaced/upgraded where required

 - dinghy cleaned and serviced

 - outboard engine serviced

 - then the whole yacht is put back together, rigged and cleaned again ready for launch!

If you own or have owned your own sailing boat, then you probably know what a huge job is - now multiply it by 23...!
