The beautiful clear blue water of the Ionian Sea flows from the warm Mediterranean and washes the shores of Albania, Italy and Greece and where better for an adventure of a lifetime. If you love sailing or would love to have a go, the Ionian Sea is the ideal destination. The wind and sailing conditions are perfect and the weather is amazing from May to September. Scattered along the western coastline of central Greece, there is a cluster of 12 islands known as the Ionian Islands.
Due to the air currents prevalent on these islands, many of the beaches have ideal conditions for windsurfing. These islands have lush vegetation, mountains, deep and cool sea waters, cultural heritage and friendly locals. An ideal mix for a relaxing and restful holiday. The Ionian Islands are known for their gorgeous summers and light winds. You can expect temperatures of around 30C during July/August, dropping to 23C in May and October. Flights from the UK are generally on a Sunday to Preveza and are available from London, Birmingham and Manchester.
When booking adventure holidays Greece, you must decide on what type of vessel. A cabin cruiser is a large yacht with multiple cabins and a crew. You rent a cabin and follow a set itinerary. A bareboat is a yacht that is chartered without a skipper, so you are in sole charge of sailing. You need to be qualified and have experience in sailing, and can, therefore, set your own itinerary. A bareboat skippered/owner is a yacht with a skipper; he may own the yacht or be employed to sail it for the owner, in which case he will agree an itinerary with you.
As the weather is going to be warm, you won't need many clothes. You will require some soft-soled deck shoes that won't scuff up the deck, bathing suits, shorts, a windbreaker or light sweater and foul-weather clothing for the occasional squally day. If you intend going ashore in the evenings, more formal clothing can be included. Electrical devices are best left at home as they will use up a lot of power, so battery run devices would be better. Storage may be limited so stowable luggage is better than bulky suitcases. A sun hat is a must, also sunglasses, sunblock, beach towels and an umbrella. A 12v mobile charger and a well-stocked medical kit should also be included.
Money and insurance
Travellers should take enough cash with them to cover all costs as ATMs will not always be to hand on a sailing holiday. It is also advisable to take another form of payment, such as traveller's cheques, pre-loaded cash cards or credit/debit cards. Also, take out a travel insurance policy, which will cover you for activities such as diving and water sports.
